Tahiti Nui International would like to thank all the participants that joined us at the Cashman Center Las Vegas, August 4, 2012! Despite a lower attendee and participant count than expected, soloists came prepared for another competitive event, especially in the Taure'are'a Division, Tamahine category ages 14-17 and Vahine Division, category ages 18-21 . As is our practice, first place winners reunited on stage vying for the grand title of Overall Vahine and Overall Tane. We would like to congratulate Julie Charles of Rau Tama Nui, who having the judges attention by a slim margin was awarded the title of Overall Vahine of Heiva i Las Vegas 2012. Nainoa George's strong performance in the tane solo overall, gave a him an uncontended lead and the award of Overall Tane of Heiva i Las Vegas 2012. All attendees were also graced with the beauty of Rau Tama Nui's ahupurotu entry. Under the direction of Ra'atira Tapo Aroquiame of Moorea, Rau Tama Nui (representation of all great people) brought to the Heiva festivities a true sense of tradition and culture in our modern times.
A special thanks to the group Hitia O Te Ra of Garden Grove, California, venturing the long journey to play as house drummers for Heiva i Las Vegas 2012. And of course we reach out to our volunteers, who came from as far as Japan at their own expense, to say "mauruuru roa".
Our mission to provide a venue and event to learn and share our culture stands firm no matter the circumstances, wherever we are in the world, whether it be Hawaii, Japan, or Las Vegas. It is with great determination and respect for our mission and culture that we announce Heiva i Las Vegas 2013, at the Cashman Center in the month of November. Please mark your calendars, prepare your groups and soloists for even greater awards! For all those who participated in Heiva i Las Vegas 2012, please consider the adventure and experience of bringing your group and soloists to Heiva i Honolulu, March 2013, at the Waikiki Shell.
