Ia Orana ALL! Life has thrown me a curve or two in the past month, so I am slightly delayed with the Participant Packet for Heiva I Honolulu 2012.

With the new additions to the Overall and additional awards, we want to be sure the Rules & Regulations for the Overall and additional award categories assist in accomplishing our Mission. Thank you for your patience. Many of you have sent me your email addresses for a copy of the Packet once completed. For those that have not been able to contact me, please feel free to do so or come back to the website once an update has posted.

REMINDER - This Heiva is our 10th Annual Celebration Event. We have added a participant social to be held at a local hotel in Waikiki March 14, 2012. It will be an event to meet everyone, pick up registration materials, and be social.

My excitement is building as the days countdown to Heiva I Las Vegas 2011 at the Cashman Center. I have reviewed my travel plans, yet again. Hotel - check, Car rental - check, Air travel - check. Not to mention the numerous tasks needed to be completed in preparation for the event.

The deadline for Group and Vendor participants was extended to match that of the Solo participants, August 1, 2011.

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline is just a few days away. Get in your applications, fact sheets and bios, and photos in as soon as possible. August 4, 2011 is our final deadline to submit all photos and bios for the design and publishing of the Heiva I Las Vegas 2011 Souvenir Program.

GOLDEN NUGGET Reservation cut off date TODAY!

Today, July 29, 2011 is the reservation cut off date for room reservations at the Golden Nugget for Tahiti Nui International's Heiva I Las Vegas special rates. As of 5pm PST today, the block of rooms being held under the special contracted rates for Heiva I Las Vegas will be released.

If you haven't booked your rooms, please contact the Golden Nugget reservations directly and continue to request for the special rate. The Golden Nugget will do their best to accommodate the rate based on room availability. (Golden Nugget reservations 1-800-634-3454)

Heiva I Las Vegas - GOLDEN NUGGET HOTEL

The Golden Nugget Hotel is Tahiti Nui International's Heiva I Las Vegas host hotel!

The reservation process was simple. I called in, mentioned the event group and was quoted rates for the dates I needed. As I had stayed in the hotel earlier this year, I knew quality was not an issue, nor safety.

I booked my room for five nights over the event period and upgraded myself to the Gold Tower and added on VIP service. I like to think I'm special. ;D

During my previous visit to the Golden Nugget, I was impressed with guest rooms as well as the number of security and staff there was to accommodate guests in all areas of the hotel. They have one of the best steak houses in Las Vegas in the hotel. There is also an awesome shark tank adjacent to the pool with a slide that was entertaining and fun at the same time. I look forward to my next stay, although much of my stay will be about planning, organizing, and working the Heiva I Las Vegas event.

Heiva I Las Vegas 2011 TICKET SALES - September 1 - 3, 2011

I am receiving many emails regarding Ticket sales for Heiva I Las Vegas 2011 at the Cashmen Center.

Advanced general admission and participant admission ticket purchases is available for Group, Vendor, and Solo participants and their families via the Ticket Order Form request process.

General Admission is $15 per day. Group and Solo participant admission is $10 per day. These rates apply to ages 11+. For children under the age of 11, ticket prices are General Admission $10 and participant admission $6 per day per person.

NOTE: Group and Solo participants are the actual performers - dancers, drummers, singers, and group leaders.

If you do not already have a Ticket Order Form and are unable to download one from Tahitinuiinternational.com, feel free to contact me at manamoo@mac.com. I can forward a form to you within minutes via email. Tickets will not be sold at ticketmaster.com.

After a successful “Heiva I Honolulu” in 2010, Tahiti Nui International reviewed the opportunity to take our “Heiva” format further around the World. Having taken our solo format to Tahiti in 2007, as well as the entire Heiva format to Japan, Tahiti Nui International is excited to host its first “Heiva I Las Vegas” to be held at the Cashman Center, Las Vegas, Nevada September 2-3, 2011, with a possible add on date of September 1, 2011.

We know many locally in Hawaii, and worldwide, look forward to participating as spectator and/or performer at the Waikiki Shell. Although it is our regret that this opportunity will not take place this year, we invite you to join us in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as prepare for “Heiva I Honolulu 2012”.

“Heiva I Honolulu 2012” will be our 10-year anniversary. This anniversary will be a celebration like no other. We encourage groups and individuals to prepare for “Heiva I Honoulu” March 2012. We will be adding additional awards, as well as opening up new dance categories and divisions.

"Let's show them how we do it," claimed one of the group leaders minutes prior to performance in a nearly 90 person group huddle; and "show them" they did! As did all senior groups competing in Heiva I Honolulu 2010.

With a seat packed Waikiki Shell, four of Honolulu's premier tahitian dance groups took stage to drum beat, music, song, and dance to tell their story. Through the rain, stories of the bamboo man, the life of the pearl diver, a woman's journey unable to bear children, and a story of forbidden love were told. Heiva I Honolulu proved to be an evening of culture and entertainment.

Tahiti Nui International's success of Heiva I Honolulu is a result of overwhelming support from the tahitian dance community, family, friends, event organizers and volunteers, participants and sponsor. In the words of Heremoana Maamaatuaiahutapu, guest judge from Papeete, "this is my land, this is my language, this is my voice."

In flight from Papeete via Los Angeles to Honolulu for more than 22 hours of travel, Heremoana Maamaatuaiahutapu, Director of Tahiti's House of Culture made the arduous journey against an already maximized personal schedule to support Tahiti Nui International at Heiva I Honolulu. As a long standing Board Member of Tahiti Nui International, Heremoana first joined the organization to assist in aligning the promotion of the tahitian culture abroad with that of the motherland. As an award winning dancer, chief ra'atira or group leader, and an accomplished orero and chanting specialist, Heremoana brings to the Heiva I Honolulu organization a reputable and current perspective. In Tahiti, Heremoana is continuously involved in projects - film, music production and more. Upon his return to Tahiti, he will be back on another long journey, to Paris!

HEIVA I HONOLULU - MARCH 19, 2010

Another eventful day at the Waikiki Shell concluded last night, March 19, 2010 in grand style with local group Tamatoa from Kaneohe, Oahu and their interpretation and presentation of the story of the TARO, leaving viewers with a message to "respect the land, the water, and the taro." Earlier in the evening with just as much style and color, a visiting group from Ishikawa, JAPAN graced the Heiva I Honolulu stage with their Otea Anuanua, The Rainbow. Green, pink, yellow, purple and red tahitian "more" skirts, like the colors of a rainbow moved "to and fro" as Tiare Heipua, our visiting group, danced to the rhythms of Tahiti. As defending Hura Ava Tau Champions, Tiare Heipua returns for their third year to Heiva I Honolulu with hopes to yet again be awarded "Hura Ava Tau (Jr. Division) Overall Otea First Place".

Earlier in the day, the solo competition finals took place with champions from each age category being selected and returning March 20, 2010 to the Heiva I Honolulu stage for yet another moment to compete for Grand Champion Tane (Male) and Vahine (Female). Heiva i Honolulu 2010 begins

Over 170 soloists competed in this years' Heiva i Honolulu competition today at the Waikiki Shell. The older age categories were extremely competitive reversing the trend where most of the competitors were on the younger side. Finalists in each age group will compete tomorrow and from there compete for the Overall soloist.

Towards the evening it got a little colder than we're used to. So if you are planning on coming Friday or Saturday, you might want to consider bringing a sweater or jacket just in case.

Group competition begins tomorrow. Gates open at 8:30 am. Tickets are $15, $10 (children 4-10). Many groups competing are in the Hura Ava Tau division, or junior division. Groups will perform aparima's, otea, paoa, and other traditional Tahitian dances.

Judging - What they are looking for at the Waikiki Shell?

Who exactly is determining the overall group and soloist titles? This year features five veteran judges who will observe and score hundreds of dancers and group performances in aparima, ahupurotu, drumming, paoa, and the overall performance of some of the best.

Several award-winning groups are vying for the overall title this year, including returning title-holder Ia Ora O Tahiti Nui of Waipio. Group leaders (ra'atira) Kevin and Aulii Kama are bringing back their group in a race to establish themselves as the top group.

Scoring these groups is a job that requires knowledge of the history of Tahitian dance, the mechanics, the mastery of the Tahitian language, an eye for details, an appreciation and experience in the making of traditional clothing and an unbiased approach to the presentations.

The judges for Heiva i Honolulu 2010 are:

Jeanne has traveled the world to promote the culture of Tahiti. In 1988, Jeanne won the prestigious title of Mrs. Tahiti in the Mrs. woman of the world pageant. She is the niece of the ÒLegendary Madeleine MouÕaÓ, who was responsible in reviving the traditional dance of Tahiti.

Roiti Sylva
Roiti is a Tahitian dance instructor, choreographer and educator. She is an assistant to the professor of the Tahitian language at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has been very influential in promoting and educating the public about the cultures of Tahiti.

Etua Tahauri
Etua is well known as a master carver who specializes in making Hawaiian and Tahitian drums. He is a regular sponsor of the Merry Monarch, Keiki Hula and many Tahitian dance competitions. Tahauri also serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Tahiti Nui International.

Iaona 'Papi' Teriipaia
Iona 'Papi' Teriipaia who is originally from Bora Bora and raised in Taha'a and Ra'iatea by his adoptive father, the late, revered Tahitian culture authority Manutahi Ma'o came to Hawaii in 1969 on a Latter-day Saint mission to serve as chief of the Polynesian Cultural Center's Tahitian village. He is a skilled carver, musician, drummer, dance teacher, choreographer and competition judge. He has been a cultural specialist with Tihati Productions since 1973 and is also currently Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tahiti Nui International, an organization that he and three others helped to establish.

Heremoana is the director of La Maison de la Culture (House of Culture). Award winning dancer, chief ra'atira and an accomplished orero and chanting specialist.

Hawaii News Now to feature Heiva i Honolulu

Monday morning, March 15, Hawaii News Now morning show Sunrise will be featuring the Tahitian dance group Ia Ora O Tahiti Nui, the defending Hura Tau Overall group. The live performance will be at 8:20 am. KFVE will both broadcast the performance and interview with Tahiti Nui International producer Rose Perreira and marketing director Mana Mo'o.

Tune in and check out the competition or cheer on the best group of 2009.

Heiva i Honolulu 2010 will take place Thursday-Saturday March 18-20, 2010 at the Waikiki Shell. Thursday will be the soloists 1st and 2nd rounds, (2:00pm-9:30pm). Friday will see the soloist finals and most Hura Ava Tau (Jr) group performances. Saturday will feature Hura Tau (Sr) group competition and soloists vying for the overall award.

This will be a first for any Tahitian dance competition. We're giving away secrets of the competition. We're giving recognition to all the soloists who placed the year before, judging and scoring tips, photo highlights, vendor information, and last but not least, summaries and details about each dance groups' performance. Information was provided by each group leader (ra'atira). Not to mention that the 32 page program is in full color from cover to cover. If you want to keep the memories of the event, this is the perfect solution.

The new design features a traditional tattoo band on the front and a stylized variation of our 2010 Heiva i Honolulu logo full of color and fun.

The biggest news of Heiva I Tahiti 2009, is that of Hei Tahiti! In grand form, their presentation is based on the sharing of the land of Raivaevae. Two brothers who confront each other, with some challenge, over the land of Raivaevae.

With spectacular costuming, energy, and performance, Tiare Trompette and Hei Tahiti memoralized the evening's events with one of the "best" finales ever!

With Heiva I Tahiti Group Presentations near closing, July 18, 2009, and my own return to the states from Tokyo has me settled, I want to be sure to update you regarding Heiva I Tahiti!

As we all know, many ori tahiti groups from "America" are in Papeete attending and participating in some of the Heiva 2009 events. Performing "sur scene" or on-stage are many of our outstanding groups, Nemenzo, being one of them. La Depeche Tahiti notes that Nemenzo, although small in number compared to their actual group number back in the states, is once again well received by Tahiti! Hats off to Elizabeth, family, and group for great individual and group presentations during Heiva! Tahiti is raving about the emotional enthusiasm and physical performances of individuals and groups from the U.S.

I love reading of such well receiving, as we hesitate at each action to ponder how we affect the world...why hesitate, just make it happen! And you have Elizabeth! Here is a shout to you!

In the category of Heiva Nui, some of the biggest names in Heiva I Tahiti 2009 opened the first night of song and dance. O Tahiti E, A hutoru Nui, Heikura Nui, and Hitireva!

Spectacle, tradition, and people filled Toata Saturday night for the big event. The four groups brought forth their traditional presentations. Although, DVDs are not yet available and may not be for months to come, youtube normally features some highlights, AND most importantly RFO Polynesie, a local media group will be airing some of Heiva I Tahiti in July.

HEIVA I TAHITI Opening Ceremonies at Toata!

The 127th edition of Heiva I Tahiti opened up with the traditional kava ceremony at Place Toata Friday night! La Depeche Tahiti, a news source for French Polynesia, announced 14 dance groups and 11 song groups are set to take stage at Toata over the next two weeks.

With the many challenges pronounced prior to the Heiva by the voices of the community, the Minister acknowledged hearing the out cry for assistance and promised that with help from others, solutions will be found. Some of the problems existing today at the local level are rehearsal space, parking, group financing, and most importantly just the lack of consideration for the efforts to bring about the Heiva I Tahiti.

This evening was highlighted by a traditional orero, much song and rhythms, and a special aparima by Janine Maru.

Polynesian Cultural Center's "Te Mahana Hiro'a O Tahiti" - Tahitian Dance Competition

Polynesian Cultural Center's "Te Mahana Hiro'a O Tahiti" - Tahitian Dance Competition was held this past weekend, July 10-11, 2009.

The event opened up Friday evening at Hale Aloha with the Tamarai'i (Junior and Senior Divisions) Solo Competition. The youngest under 5 were adorable with parents just off stage anxious for their children to dance and hop around as they do at home. The rest of the night was filled with color and showmanship. Jordan Mariteragi won the Tamari'i Tane Jr. Overall Soloist! Jasmine, also of Nonosina Hawaii took the Tamari'i Vahine Overall Soloist title in the Sr. Division. The group events, Saturday, presented infants to teens in group performance. Marania Haoragi directed by Tahia Parker, Te Hamata directed by Penny Tuilolo, and Nonosina Hawaii directed by Jon and Tiani Mariteragi took the PCC Main stage in song and dance! From the well known popular tunes and beats of French Polynesia to the new, Nonosina Hawaii came home with Sr. Division first place honors. For all awards see PCC's website for details and photos.

Hitia O Te Ra hosted Hura Tahiti 2009 in Southern California, June 19-20, 2009, hosting over 300 solo competition participants and approximately 6 groups in the group categories.

Looking at their results, there were a few names that crossed the Heiva I Honolulu award winners, to name a few:

Heiva I Tahiti Participants Voices Heard!

La Depeche Tahiti wrote this morning about the challenges dance group participants are having shipping in the costumes, particularly mores.

Locally, the more manufacturers are only able to produce a very small number of mores. Each Heiva I Tahiti participating group averages 80 dance members, not including musicians and chorus group. The local more producers are able to costume 20 of 80 dancers per group which leaves group leaders purchasing abroad. It is the import tax that sends participants' costs sky rocketing. Even Marguerite Lai of O Tahiti E, voiced her concern claiming that participating in Heiva I Tahiti leaves groups without enough funds, even after numerous fundraising events throughout the year.

Although this news is GOOD news for the more suppliers here locally in Hawaii, it still leaves Tahiti with a major issue to resolve.

PCC's Annual Te Mahana Hiro'a o Tahiti

The Polynesian Cultural Center's ninth annual Te Mahana Hiro'a o Tahiti dance competition for children agens 3-18 will be held Friday July 10th, and Saturday July 11th..

The Friday evening preliminary competition will take place in the PCC's Hale Aloha luau amphitherater, starting at 7:45pm, and the Saturday finals will be in the Pacific Theater starting at 9:00am.

As usual an independent panel of Tahitian judges will determine the winners in age and gender categories.

The Cultural Center's Tahitian celebration is held each year about the same time as the Heiva, which traditionally was the French Polynesian observance of France's Bastille Day. Since French Polynesia obtained autonomie from France on June 29, 1974, the Heiva festival has become much more a grand celebration of Tahitian culture . . . much like the one you can enjoy at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Tahitian Dance Competitions "Where are they" and "How to register"

In a previous posting, I recently received a comment inquiring about "registering for our dance competition and/or other competitions".

I responded with the following and wanted to post that anew for all:

Certain organizations (like us) and or dance group(s) will host a dance competition/festival; some annually, otherwise every two or three years.

Another organization that hosts an annual dance competition is the Polynesian Cultural Center, a major sponsor of Tahiti Nui International's annual "Heiva I Honolulu". Te Mahana Hiro'a O Tahiti, is held every July near Tiurai season, normally in July. For more information visit their website:

Locally on the island, Manutahi just completed their event on the 19th of April. Te Vai Ura Nui and Maohi Nui host solo dance events occasionally. Also, it is rumored that Mehetia Productions may be holding an event this year.

Otherwise, if traveling is an option, on Maui and Kauai, there are dance festivals scheduled for August of this year. Although the annual Hilo Fete was canceled this year, look forward to future events by the Hilo organization. California groups, Nonosina, Nemenzo, and Hitia O Te Ra (as well as others) hold dance competitions annually, too.

In Las Vegas, one of our sponsors, Ravahere Allred, is hosting a Miss Pearls of Polynesia Pageant and a dance competition in Las Vegas.

They all have websites and are easily googleable.

Lastly, we look forward to your participation in our event for 2010! So I have you on our mailing list and will be contacting you once our forms are online and our online payment schedule is in order for Heiva I Honolulu 2010.

Maohi Nui Fundraiser at Aloha Tower Marketplace

I am so grateful to have made time in my schedule to attend Maohi Nui's Tahiti Fete Fundraiser last night, March 21, at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Upon arrival at 7:30pm, Kapena was on stage gathering the crowd in preparation for Maohi Nui's group performance. Hosting the evening's line up was none other than, Mental Mele. The event I missed was a performance by the new group Ia Ora O Tahiti Nui. With slightly fewer dancers, they performed this year's Overall Otea from Heiva I Honolulu where they took First Place in the Senior Overall Otea category. Also on stage with Maohi Nui was Heiva I Honolulu's Overall Male Soloist, Keawe McArthur!

There were vendors on-site, including one of the major sponsors, Hinano Tahiti. Manari'i, who has competed at Tahiti Nui International's Heiva I Honolulu, in the solo division just last year, was also a registered vendor, selling his wife's pearl enhanced designed jewelry. Mana, not to be confused with me, also performed earlier in the evening with Ia Ora O Tahiti Nui.

At the event, I even ran into Aunty Geri, Elaine, Kumu Kale, and Nathan, volunteers of Heiva I Honolulu!

Their performance was as usual, well presented! With a pre-show fashion show of Hinano Tahiti designs along side Maohi Nui solo dancers to the beats of Maohi Nui's percussion group, you could actually taste what was to come. Performing otea, couple solo, aparima, and even a kapa, Maohi Nui under the direction of Mervin Lilo in grand form completed the soiree with eventful grandeur.

For anyone who participated or watched the 2009 Heiva i Honolulu, you were kept aware of the happenings by Master of Ceremony Johann Hironui Bouit. A broadcast journalist by trade, Johann is the anchor for Tahiti Nui Television and an audio-visual producer/director for television, documentary films and commercial projects. He has been involved in over a dozen cultural television productions involving Ori Tahiti.

Johann held the program together with fun and interesting information as well as a preview of his own dancing skills. Not only was he acting as MC, he also was preparing a project for his Pacific Network operation. He has produced a new "Heiva i Honolulu" channel on his website filled with highlights and other videos of Tahitian dance and areas that relate to all the work that goes into dancing and putting the extravagant pageantry and presentations together. Check it out and keep watch for future developments in this great voice for the Tahitian dance community.

Letter from Heikapua Sabarsah (Ra'atira pupu of Tiare Heipua)

Maururu nui roa to Tahiti Nui International board members. My name is Heikapua Sabarsah (Ra'atira pupu of Tiare Heipua). We just got back to Japan last night and are still excited. This great experience will remain with each one of us forever and we will make more effort to learn Tahitian culture.

Next year, we'd like to come back with greater numbers including keiki. I hope you could consider having a keiki division in the future so that I can encourage them much more.

Again, thank you for your effort to make this great event come alive and let us join in a part of Tahitian Family.

Tiare Heipua is a Tahitian dance group from Ishikawa, Japan. They were awarded 1st place in each of the Junior Aparima division, Junior Ahupurotu division, Mama Ruau Ahupurotu division, and were also awarded the Junior Overall trophy. This is the second consecutive year that they have won the Junior Overall award.

Competition heats up even in the cold rain

With 22 Tahitian dance groups represented in the solo competition, there were guaranteed to be plenty of great performances. Last minute additions added to the competition going over time.

Heiva i Honolulu 2009 started a few minutes late but moved quickly through the first round. An exhibition round of 2-3 year olds started an afternoon and evening full of energetic dance and drumming. The second round saw at least 4 ties in several age groups and required dance offs. Results of the solo competition were announced about 9:30 pm amid an umbrella wielding loyal crowd waiting in the cold light rain.

Master of Ceremony Cathy Teriipaia announced the 1st place dancers for each age group. The 1st place dancers will be competing today (Friday) for the overall tane and vahine soloist awards.

Full results for each category will be announced on Saturday during the awards ceremony (8:30 pm). Heiva i Honolulu 2009 is taking place at the Waikiki Shell and runs from March 12-14, 2009. Admission is $15 - 11 yrs and older, $10 (4-10 yrs old) and free for 3 and under. Tickets are available at the Waikiki Shell box office, Times Supermarkets, The Blaisdell Center box office, BYU Hawaii and online at ticketmaster.com

Group competition begins today with groups from Honolulu, Keaau, Kihei, Okinawa, Nagano, Fukui, Ishikawa and Tokyo. Gates open at 2 pm and the competition begins at 4 pm.

If you've visited the Tahiti Nui International website lately, passed by a poster, given a flyer or seen the ads in some of the local publications, you've probably noticed that striking young woman in a Tahitian outfit equally eye catching. Who is that girl, you ask?

It's none other than local girl Savanna Alcosiba from the Tahitian dance group Here Tama Nui. When notified that she was going to be adorning all the Heiva i Honolulu marketing materials this year, she was ecstatic to say the least. At only 15, she embodies many of the qualities of a dedicated dancer.

Here's the complete schedule for the 2009 Heiva i Honolulu. Please note that this the final draft. However, changes may occur that may require minor adjustments. But it looks to be an exciting event. With 10 dance groups and over 150 soloists, the event is shaping up to be a very busy weekend.

The 2009 Heiva i Honolulu will take place March 12-14, 2009 at the Waikiki Shell.
