The tahitian culture is so vibrant here in Japan.  Where in the world can you find people who would battle a typhoon to gather at a place to sing and dance and give praises to a culture?  Yes it happened here at Heiva i Japan.  Thank you to all the participants who shared the joy of winning and shed tears of defeat, "we" are all winners.  Together, we forged a lifetime of friendship through a culture that is love and respected.  That's winning!

A special "mauruuru roa" to all the Ra'atira pupu for teaching your student to love "our" culture and bring dignity to the name "Tahiti".  An immense gratitude to all of our judges for your kindgness, your fairness, and your expertise.  To our house drummers, Allen Ramento of Here Tama Nui, you rocked the place with your amazing talent.

To Kenzo Tanaka and our Japan team, "wow" you guys are simply amazing, never questioning, never demanding, but simply "getting things done".  And of course I couldn't just end my thoughts without expressing my profound gratitude to my entire staff, especially Mana Mo'o you are awesome, Richard, Jon, Norko, and Nene, man what a team!

Thank you God for this time, this moment, THIS LIFE!

Na roto i te a'au ha'eha'a...Mauruuru e Ia Ora I te Ori Tahiti.

E te mau hoa here, IaOrana tatou
As the new President of Tahiti Nui International, I would like to start by saying “Bravo”!  I am humbled and overwhelmed by the response that we as an organization have received thus far.
Each of you performed your hearts out.   From the front of stage dancers, singers and drummers, the tamarii, to the back of stage, the parents who helped with costuming and rehearsals; you all deserve a big round of applause.  I take my hat off to the Ra’atira Pupu for your ingenuity, creativity, and ability to execute such incredible presentations.  You are truly amazing and I remain awestruck at the leadership you have exemplified during the entire event.
A special recognition is well deserved for Auntie Denise, Christopher, Allen and Theresa Ramento of Here Tama Nui.  Congratulations for your win as Hura Tau Overall Grand Champion for the third consecutive year.  Your theme presentation of Herumoa, Te Hanahana o Waikiki was “genius” and enjoyed by our judges.  Thank you for your suggestions to showcase the Hura Tau Grand Champion as the closing group in all future Heiva I Honolulu.  This will be implemented and documented into the group rules and regulations for 2014.
I would like to welcome back Tiare Ura O Tahiti to the Waikiki Shell.  Though your presence has always been with us in the solo competition, your win as Hura Ava Tau Grand Champion and Perpetual proves your place at Heiva I Honolulu as essential and we look forward to seeing you each year here forward.
A last minute judge’s recognition was made on stage during the Award Ceremony to Maohi Nui’s portrayal of the Puaka in their ote’a production of Oriata.  On behalf of the judges’ and Tahiti Nui International we would like to thank Maohi Nui for your participation at Heiva I Honolulu 2013 and congratulate you for your win of the Hura Tau Perpetual Award.
Manarii and Nalani Gauthier of Tahiti Mana, Elizabeth and Nene of Nemenzo, Kevin and Aulii Kama of Ia Ora O Tahiti Nui, Tino Moe of Tamatoa, Pualani Horiuchi of Puahinano, Charelle Silva of Mehetia Productions and of course Rey and Lisa Aguilar of Te Mana O Te Ra, thank you for gracing the Waikiki Shell stage with your unforgettable performances.  I would like to also express my heartfelt gratitude to our exhibition groups O Rainearii from Tahiti and also Te Ahitoa from Laie, Hawaii.  Your exhibition performances were exactly what we needed to enhance Heiva I Honolulu 2013.
You are all truly amazing artists and we are extremely grateful for your support of Tahiti Nui Interational and Heiva I Honolulu each year.  To all of our dedicated staff and especially my Vice President of Operations Mana Mo’o, I am blessed and honored to work with you all.
Na roto I te here o Te Atua, Mauruuru e Mauruuru Maita’i

TAHITI MANA, Hura Tau group participant from Honolulu, Hawaii concluded the day's events with their interpretation of the famous legend of Tafa'i, Tahitian demi-god that championed any great feat including the reunification of the spirit and body of his beloved Hina. (Photo Above)

Groups gathered for competition at the Waikiki Shell Friday, as finalists awaited anxiously for the results of Thursday's solo competition.  Friday morning began with Hura Ava Tau group participant Tamatoa's Tamari'i Otea themed Voyage, followed by other group entry performances:  Tiare Ura O Tahiti's Drumming and Vahine Aparima entries, as well as Nenemenzo's drumming and Tamatoa's return with their Vahine Ahupurotu.  The Solo Award Ceremony highlighted the afternoon despite the incredible performances of hard hitting drumming by Tamatoa, and ote'a exhibition by one of Tahiti's very own dance schools from Taravao, O'Raineari'i, directed by Hearani Salmon.

PRESS RELEASE –

Honolulu, Hawaii – March 20, 2013 - HEIVA I HONOLULU, produced by Tahiti Nui International, is Hawaii’s biggest and best Tahitian dance competition. Tomorrow, Friday and Saturday, March 21-23, 2013 the Waikiki Shell stage will be full of hundreds of soloists and premier Tahitian performance groups representing Hawaii, North America and Asia. A full three-day of activities for visitors and locals, this Heiva is a gathering of the best in Tahitian culture.

What is a heiva you ask? In Tahitian, the word Heiva (hei meaning to assemble, and va meaning community places) refers to activities, pastimes, physical exercise, and festivals. Music, dancing, singing and sporting events have always held an important place in the Polynesian community. Heiva i Honolulu, now in its 11th year, is modeled after Heiva i Tahiti, which occurs annually during the month of July and is the largest cultural event in Tahiti and French Polynesia.

From the fast hip shaking Otea movements to the powerful beating drums to the seductive rhythms of song and legends, this competition is sure to entertain. This year we also feature Polynesian fashion shows and an exhibition by a local Marquesan group performing traditional haka’s rarely seen outside of French Polynesia. An array of Polynesian arts and crafts unique solely to this event, complete the festivities.

Months of rehearsal culminate for all participating groups with dramatic energized performances of the Otea, Ahupurotu, Drumming, and Aparima. Soloists alike prepare for a complete day of competition amongst those similar in age for the coveted award of top dancer in their age
group as well as advancing to the solo champion award, the Overall Tane and Overall Vahine titles.

Tickets are on sale at the Blaisdell Ticket Box Office, or each day two hours prior to the event start time at the Waikiki Shell Box Office. General Admission: Adult (11yrs+) $15 Child $10 (4-10yrs). Ticket prices noted are per day. The celebration is open to visitors and locals alike.

Heiva i Honolulu 2013 is sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines, Polynesian Cultural Center, Aloha Hula Supply, Black Pearl Designs, Germaine’s Luau, Hokapi Creations, Tahiti Imports, Tahitian Drums by Chief Miko, Tihati Productions, and Vanille de Tahiti.

TAHITI NUI INTERNATIONAL is a cultural organization founded for the purposes of preserving, promoting and sharing the cultures, arts and crafts of the five groups of islands that make up French Polynesia, commonly known as Tahiti.

For more information, if you would like to schedule in studio or have press passes provided, contact: Mana Mo’o (manamoo@mac.com), Tahiti Nui International, 3246 Hinano Street, Honolulu, HI 96816 (808)732-7342 www.tahitinuiinternational.com.
